The Retort Clamp, 3 Finger uses three rubber-covered jaws to hold larger or odd-shaped glassware up to 100mm in diameter. The Universal Clamp, Die Casting is the general-purpose choice, cork-lined and holding up to 75mm dia. The Clamp Co-Axial, Three Prong steps up to a spring-controlled adjustable nut and rubber-lined jaws for a firmer, more repeatable grip, also up to 75mm dia, on its own 12-inch chrome-plated rod. Two clamps are purpose-built for a single piece of glassware: the Retort Clamp for Burette (up to 50mm dia, cork lined) and the Retort Clamp for Condenser (cork lined, 7-inch rod) — both are designed to be used together with a Boss Head rather than mounted directly. The Burette Clamp with Attached Boss Head combines both parts in one swivel-type fitting, holding up to 50mm dia and moving to any angle, which saves buying a separate boss head for that position.

Boss heads — connecting a clamp to a stand rod

A boss head is the right-angle coupling that locks a clamp onto a retort stand's vertical rod. The Standard Boss Head, Pressure Die Cast, Aluminium has two V-grooves set at right angles to each other, accepting rods up to 16.5mm dia and secured with nickel-plated thumb screws. The Boss Head Square Type uses a die-cast alloy body that additionally accepts square and tubular sections up to 16.5mm dia, and can also grip flat items such as rulers, magnets or drawing-board metal at right angles — useful outside standard round-rod clamping.

Retort stand bases — matching base material to stability and budget

All the stand bases in this range take a rod (10mm dia on six of the seven bases) and differ mainly in material, weight and stability. Sheet Metal is the lightest, most economical base. Pressure Die Casting and Cast Iron step up in base weight for greater stability on the bench, with the die-cast version's recessed base fitted with rubber feet on its two shorter sides. The A Shaped base gives the widest footprint (125mm sides) and the tallest standard rod height (600mm) for taller glassware setups, while the Tripod Type base gives three-point stability on an uneven surface. Stainless Steel is the corrosion-resistant option, with a longer 750mm rod, and Plastic (polystyrene/polypropylene) is a non-corrosive alternative to metal, with a polypropylene-covered rod (12.5mm x 750mm) that resists the same chemical attack a metal stand can be prone to near acid or solvent work.

Do I need a separate boss head for every clamp?

Most clamps in this range — the 3 Finger, Universal, Co-Axial, Burette and Condenser clamps — are used together with a Boss Head to attach to a stand rod. The Burette Clamp with Attached Boss Head is the exception, since its boss head is built into the fitting.

What's the difference between the Standard Boss Head and the Square Type?

The Standard Boss Head is built for round rods up to 16.5mm dia. The Square Type accepts square and tubular sections up to 16.5mm dia as well as round rods, and can also grip flat items such as rulers or wooden strips at right angles.

Which stand base should I choose for chemical work?
