Sonometer

The EduScope India Sonometer is used to explore the wave properties of vibrating strings, and forms part of EduScope India's range of physics laboratory equipment.

Construction and specifications

The instrument is fitted with two mounts for installing strings of different linear densities, each with a sliding bridge for varying the string length and a string guide to keep the string correctly seated. String tension is applied through a tensioning lever offering a 5x mechanical advantage over the hanging mass, with a built-in spirit level for checking that the lever is level. A soundboard resonates the strings when a tuning fork is placed on it, adjustable feet allow the instrument to be levelled, and thumbscrews secure the lever and peg ends during assembly. The set is supplied complete with 2 bridges, 2 guitar picks, and string sets in 0.014-inch and 0.018-inch gauges.
