When a charge is applied to the instrument, it distributes down to the pair of suspended leaves, which then repel each other and visibly separate because they carry the same sign of charge; the degree of separation gives a rough visual indication of how much charge is present. The instrument is housed in a 250ml borosilicate flask, with a metal rod attached to a rubber stopper that seals the flask's neck; inside the flask, a pair of aluminum leaves is suspended from an alligator clip fitted to the lower end of the rod, and a knob on top of the rubber stopper is where the charge is applied. When a charge is applied to the knob, it travels down the rod to the alligator clip inside the flask, and the aluminum leaves separate, giving a clear visual indication of the presence of charge. Also available separately from EduScope India are a rod and alligator clip assembly, for laboratories that want to fit the assembly to their own flask, and replacement aluminum leaves, useful for labs that want to reuse existing glassware or replace leaves that have become worn or damaged over time.
