Construction and Insulation
The calorimeter consists of two nested aluminum cans separated by a 1.7cm thick styrofoam liner, creating an insulating gap that reduces conductive and convective heat loss between the inner reservoir and the outside air. A plastic insulator ring sits at the rim of the assembly, protecting the styrofoam insulation from physical damage and shielding it from liquid spills during use. A clear molded plastic lid fitted with a filler cap closes over the assembly, allowing measured quantities of liquid to be added to the inner can without having to remove the lid.
Included Accessories and Use
Each unit ships with a thermometer stopper and an insulated stirrer, allowing students to track temperature change while manually agitating the contents to keep the temperature uniform throughout the experiment. The inner reservoir holds 150ml of liquid, a capacity suited to standard specific-heat and calorimetry exercises where a known mass of water or other fluid is used to measure heat absorbed or released.
