How the Experiment Works
To run the experiment, one half of the current balance is placed inside the solenoid's coil while the other half remains free, fitted with an adjustable counterweight and able to carry light additional masses. Once current is supplied to both the balance and the solenoid from an external power supply, the balance deflects under the resulting force. Adding light masses to the free arm until the balance is restored to its original position lets that force be measured directly. The air core solenoid's clear acrylic former and large diameter are designed to easily fit the current balance inside it, while five tappings brought out to red binding posts give quick access to windings of 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 turns simply by moving one plug between posts. The coil's total resistance works out to 20 Ω, or 4 Ω per 100 windings, and each 100-turn segment can safely carry up to 1.5A of current, so the whole setup can be run from a simple 6VDC power source.
