For the Seebeck effect demonstration, one of the apparatus's two aluminum legs is immersed in ice-cold water while the other sits in hot water; the temperature difference maintained across the legs generates a small electric current, enough to turn the unit's small turbine — a direct, visible illustration that a temperature difference alone can do electrical work, and a working example of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Plugging the apparatus into a DC power supply reverses the process for the Peltier effect demonstration: passing current through the unit makes one strip heat up while the other stays cold, showing the same thermoelectric junction working in reverse.
